In this lecture given by João Carvalho, an analysis is made of emigration and immigration in Portugal, namely through the study of the four waves of Portuguese emigration, the three waves of immigration to Portugal, and the politics and politicisation of immigration.

João Carvalho is a researcher at the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte), of the Iscte, University Institute of Lisbon, where he is currently developing the research project The politics of international migration in Western Europe, Reconstruir a solidariedade numa era de dualização do emprego, and Impacto dos partidos de extrema direita na política de imigração. Was a lecturer in the department of political science at ISCTE, University Institute of Lisbon between 2015 and 2018. His research interests focus on issues of comparative politics, international migration politics, political parties, and extreme right-wing parties in particular. Among his publications, his PhD thesis stands out Impact of extreme Right Parties on Immigration Policy. Comparing Britain, France and Italy, published by Routledge on 2014 and 2016.

About the moderator

Cecília Menduni Luís is a research scholarship holder at the Centro em Rede de Investigação em Antropologia do Iscte, Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. Her research interests include cultural studies, multiculturalism, gender studies, social anthropology, ethnography, social and cultural anthropology, cultural diversity, ethnicity, cross-cultural studies and social exclusion, currently focusing on issues related to immigration, integration and public policies.
