State of Emigration
Today we have a growing and diverse number of studies on Portuguese emigration, from individual doctoral or post-doctoral projects to collective research of larger size and more ambitious objectives. The series State of Emigration intends to give an account, in condensed form, of the knowledge produced by those projects and researches.

This book, part of the collection State of Emigration, presents summaries of the results of three major studies on Portuguese emigration, carried out between 2012 and 2015, in a period of great growth in the volume of exits in the context of economic and social crisis. The first, Back to the Future: The New Emigration and the Relationship with Portuguese Society, aimed to understand the size and new characteristics of Portuguese emigration in the 21st century. The second, Brain drain and academic mobility from Portugal to Europe (BRADRAMO), evaluated the reality of the “brain drain” in Portugal, namely its recent increase in this century. The third, Atlantic crossings. Materiality, contemporary movements and politics of belonging, analyzed the movements of people and material goods between Portugal and Brazil, a historical destination of Portuguese emigration, today with new attributes.
