From 2000 to 2015 there are three distinct phases in Portuguese emigration to Spain. In the first, from 2000 to 2007, the number of entries registered a continuous increase, more pronounced and significant as of 2003. In 2007, the maximum peak of the series under analysis was reached, with the arrival of 27,178 Portuguese in Spain. From 2008 until 2013, there is a second, now decreasing phase, pronounced until 2009. In 2014, the third phase begins, with the resumption of growth in the number of Portuguese entries in Spain, confirmed in 2015.
Today, Spain is the fifth country where most Portuguese emigrate. It is now necessary to analyse the composition of the current flow, compared with that before 2007: we are witnessing a new flow of more skilled emigration or a resumption of the demand for low-skilled labour (which, before 2007, was mainly directed to the construction sector)?
