Remittance growth accelerated in 2015
Inês Vidigal
According to data from the Bank of Portugal, in 2015 the country entered 3303.65 million euros in remittances, 8% more than in 2014. Thus, the positive evolution registered in the last six years has been maintained. +

Until the entry into force of the euro in 2002, remittances received in Portugal increased. In 2001, the highest figure in the series under analysis was 3736.82 million of euros in remittances. From 2002, it is possible to distinguish three phases. Between 2002 and 2004, the value of remittances decreased, which could be due to the change in the registration criteria resulting from the creation of the euro area rather than to actual changes in the value of the transfers effected. Between 2004 and 2011, the value of shipments remained stable, at a slightly undulating level. In the period 2012-2015, it rose significantly, reaching the highest value in the Euro era in 2015. In the last year of the series there was even an acceleration of that rise, compared to the deceleration observed in 2014 [see, in addition to the Excel file attached to this highlight, the new table "Remittances, 2000-2015", in / Data / Global Estimates].
