Since 2000, the number of Portuguese entries in Luxembourg has been variable. From 2000 to 2009, there was a continuous growth, with the exception of 2004. In 2009 and 2010, there was a similar drop to that of emigration to other countries, in the context of the global financial crisis. From 2010 to 2012, Portuguese inflow into Luxembourg increased, accompanying the large outflows of Portuguese in the second phase of the crisis. As of 2012, the trend has been steadily declining. Since 2002, there was no entry value as low as in 2016.

There is also a tendency to the decrease of the relative weight of Portuguese immigration in the total immigration entered in Luxembourg. In 2015, the number of Portuguese who emigrated to Luxembourg represented 15% of the number of foreigners entering the country that year, a figure below the 30% observed in 2003. From 2013 to 2016, total number of entries in Luxembourg decreased. For the first time since 2009, the decrease in the Portuguese inflow was accompanied by a decrease in the total number of foreigners in Luxembourg.
