Portuguese emigrants are more than two million
Rui Pena Pires
According to the latest estimates of the United Nations, there would be, in 2017, more than 2.2 million Portuguese emigrants residing abroad. More precisely, 2,266,735. Of these, 66% would live in Europe and 26% in the American continent. +

The United Nations estimates confirm the great concentration of Portuguese emigration in Europe, the progressive loss of attractiveness of the American continent, both North and South, and the revitalization of African destinations in the 21st century. In this latest review of estimates of international migration by source and destination between 1990 and 2017, new figures for 2017 were not only calculated but also significantly revised for the full series reported in 2015. These revisions hamper further analysis of changes over the period considered, not always due to changes in population movements, but rather in the recording and estimation of these movements.
