More than 8,000 Portuguese emigrated to Spain in 2021
Inês Vidigal
There were 8,272 Portuguese who entered Spain in 2020, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics. This Spanish agency accounted for a total of 662,173 foreigners entering Spain, with the Portuguese accounting for 1.2% of this total. +

The downward trend that had been seen since 2019 was interrupted in 2021, when the number of Portuguese arrivals in Spain increased again (27.8%), in a year in which the number of total arrivals of foreigners also recorded a growth (26.5%). Over the time series under analysis, Portuguese emigration to Spain had a minimum value in 2000 (2,955 entries) and a maximum value in 2007 (27,178 entries). Spain was one of the few important destinations where Portuguese entry had been increasing steadily since 2013, in contrast with the general downward trend of Portuguese emigration from that same year onwards.
